Dewey's 24 Hour Read-A-Thon April 2014 Master Post

I finally broke down and signed up for the Read-a-thon!  I have had so much fun participating in the past and this post convinced me I should give it a shot again.  I haven't participated since last April and I've had a baby since then so I'm not sure how this is going to go.  I'm going to try to get as much reading done as I can between chasing Julia and all the other commitments I have. I'm hoping to make a dent in the following books: The Runaway Highlander by R.L. Syme The King by J.R. Ward Also, my hold on Catching Fire (the movie) came in a the library so I will finally get to watch it tomorrow!  It's book related so it counts, right? I'll update this post throughout the day to let you know how I'm doing.  Have fun everyone! Hour 0 Kick Off post 1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? I'm in Kansas. 2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? I can't wait to read The King 3) Which...

Quick Review: "Intensity" by Dean Koontz

From Goodreads:  Past midnight, Chyna Shepard, twenty-six, gazes out a moonlit window, unable to sleep on her first night in the Napa Valley home of her best friend's family. Instinct proves reliable. A murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, has entered the house, intent on killing everyone inside. A self-proclaimed "homicidal adventurer," Vess lives only to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse or limits, to live with "intensity." Chyna is trapped in his deadly orbit.  Chyna is a survivor, toughened by a lifelong struggle for safety and self-respect. Now she will be tested as never before. At first her sole aim is to get out alive--until, by chance, she learns the identity of Vess's next intended victim, a faraway innocent only she can save. Driven by a newly discovered thirst for meaning beyond mere self-preservation, Chyna musters every inner resource she has to save an enda...

Review: "Catching Air" by Sarah Pekkanen

From Goodreads:  A chance to run a B&B in snowy, remote Vermont—it’s an offer Kira Danner can’t resist after six soul-crushing years of working as a lawyer in Florida. As Kira and her husband, Peter, step into a brand new life, she quells her fears about living with the B&B’s co-owners: Peter’s sexy, irresponsible brother Rand, and Rand’s wife, Alyssa…who is essentially a stranger. For her part, Alyssa sees taking over the B&B as the latest in a string of adventures. Plus, a quiet place might help her recover from the news that she can’t bear children. But the idyllic town proves to be anything but serene: Within weeks, the sisters-in-law are scrambling to prepare for their first big booking—a winter wedding—and soon a shy, mysterious woman comes to work for them. Dawn Zukoski is hiding something; that much is clear. But what the sisters-in-law don't realize is that Dawn is also hiding from someone… My Thoughts:   This isn't a book I probably wo...

Review: "The Collector of Dying Breaths" by M.J. Rose

Synopsis:  From one of America’s most imaginative storytellers comes a passionate tale of love and treachery, spanning the days of Catherine de Medici’s court to the twenty-first century and starring a woman drawn back, time and again, to the past. In 1533, an Italian orphan with an uncanny knack for creating fragrance is plucked from poverty to become Catherine de Medici’s perfumer. To repay his debt, over the years RenĂ© le Florentine is occasionally called upon to put his vast knowledge to a darker purpose: the creation of deadly poisons used to dispatch the Queen’s rivals. But it’s RenĂ©’s other passion—a desire to reanimate a human breath, to bring back the lives of the two people whose deaths have devastated him—that incites a dangerous treasure hunt five centuries later. That’s when Jac L’Etoile—suffering from a heartache of her own—becomes obsessed with the possibility of unlocking Rene’s secret to immortality. Soon Jac’s search reconnects her with G...
