January 2016 Wrap Up

Blech! I'm so glad that January is over.  The whole month always feels like a giant holiday hangover and it just felt especially crappy this year.  I didn't even touch the blog because I was so burned out on everything.

In this post, I'm going to combine my #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks and #FitReaders wrap up since I've been pretty bad about updating.

In January, I read 5 books toward my goal of 52 for the year so according to goodreads I'm right on track. It felt really slow to me because usually I read so much more in any given month.  I had a hard time focusing on books plus I'm taking a class this semester so even though I'm reading whole books, I am reading a lot of articles and book excerpts.

Out of the 5 books I read this month, only 2 were books I own and 1 was a re-read so I didn't do that great with reading my own books.  I am currently reading a ebook I own (a move in the right direction!) but after I'm done with it, I really need to get started on physical books.  We are hoping to move this year and I want to clear off my shelves!

In January I read:

1.) Tricky Twenty Two by Janet Evanovich
2.) Sweet Talk by Julie Garwood
3.) The Romanov Sisters by Helen Rappaport
4.) The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons
5.) To Be a Queen by Annie Whitehead

My January stats were:

-5 books read
   -1 non-fiction
   -2 historical fiction
   -1 review books
   -2 library books
   -2 books I own
   -5 ebooks

Let me start off by saying, I had every intention of getting back on track with regard to food and exercise in January but I failed miserably.  I fell down our wooden stairs at the beginning of the month and injured my tailbone so the only exercise I got was walking (anything else was pretty painful).  I managed to walk at least 3 times a week for the whole month but that was really about it.  I also did horribly with my eating.  January is a stressful month at my work (classes starting and the problems that go with that) so I pretty much ate everything in sight.  The last time I weighed myself was December 12 and I managed to gain 4 lbs between then and now. (insert sad face here)

So I'm re-committing to my goals in February.  I'm tracking my food in MyFitnessPal and have already gotten in 3 workouts this week.  We are visiting my family in California in six weeks and then start swimming lessons with Julia two weeks after that so I really need to drop some weight.  I'm feeling very motivated and excited for my pants to fit again!

I hope everyone has a great February!

Review: "Oleanna" by Julie K. Rose

Synopsis:  Set during the separation of Norway from Sweden in 1905, this richly detailed novel of love and loss was inspired by the life of the author's great-great-aunts. Oleanna and her sister Elisabeth are the last of their family working their farm deep in the western fjordland. A new century has begun, and the world outside is changing, but in the Sunnfjord their world is as small and secluded as the verdant banks of a high mountain lake. The arrival of Anders, a cotter living just across the farm's border, unsettles Oleanna 's peaceful but isolated existence. Sharing a common bond of loneliness and grief, Anders stirs within her the wildness and wanderlust she has worked so hard to tame. When she is confronted with another crippling loss, Oleanna must decide once and for all how to face her past, claim her future, and find her place in a wide new world. My Thoughts:   I was very surprised by what an absolutely beautiful story Oleanna is.  The ...

Review and Giveaway: "Distant Signs" by Anne Richter

Synopsis: Distant Signs is an intimate portrait of two families spanning three generations amidst turbulent political change, behind and beyond the Berlin Wall. In 1960s East Germany, Margret, a professor’s daughter from the city, meets and marries Hans, from a small village in Thuringia. The couple struggle to contend with their different backgrounds, and the emotional scars they bear from childhood in the aftermath of war. As East German history gradually unravels, with collision of the personal and political, their two families’ hidden truths are quietly revealed. An exquisitely written novel with strongly etched characters that stay with you long after the book is finished and an authentic portrayal of family life behind the iron curtain based on personal experience of the author who is East German and was 16 years old at the fall of the Berlin Wall. Why do families repeat destructive patterns of behaviour across generations? Should the personal take precedence over...

Mailbox Monday (49)

It's time for another Mailbox Monday post!  Once again I could not resist the cheap ebooks that Amazon and Barnes and Noble were promoting this week.  I really need to stop!  I already have more than I can read.  I also was able to spend a little time browsing at the library and I came home with a nice stack of books.  These days, I hardly ever get to spend time at the library by myself for more than a minute or two so it was wonderful to have time to just wander and see what I could find. Purchased (for kindle): The Color of Secrets by Lindsay Ashford The One I Was by Eliza Graham House of Bathory by Linda Lafferty   Purchased (for nook): One Night in Winter by Simon Sebag Montefiore  Becoming Queen Victoria by Kate Williams From the Library: The Messenger by Daniel Silva   The Ripper's Wife by Brandy Purdy Hotel Moscow by Talia Carner Brazen by Katherine Longshore What books did you get...
