Synopsis: Distant Signs is an intimate portrait of two families spanning three generations amidst turbulent political change, behind and beyond the Berlin Wall. In 1960s East Germany, Margret, a professor’s daughter from the city, meets and marries Hans, from a small village in Thuringia. The couple struggle to contend with their different backgrounds, and the emotional scars they bear from childhood in the aftermath of war. As East German history gradually unravels, with collision of the personal and political, their two families’ hidden truths are quietly revealed. An exquisitely written novel with strongly etched characters that stay with you long after the book is finished and an authentic portrayal of family life behind the iron curtain based on personal experience of the author who is East German and was 16 years old at the fall of the Berlin Wall. Why do families repeat destructive patterns of behaviour across generations? Should the personal take precedence over
Great new books! I have a copy of Astor Place Vintage that I hope to read soon. Because I went to BEA, I had a banner week in books. You can see them here:

DeleteNice group of books. I have been meaning to read those books by George R. R. Martin but they are so huge that they intimidate me. Come see what I got at Inside of a Dog and Ms. Martin Teaches Media. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI was very intimidated by how big they are but once you get started reading them, you quickly forget how long they are.
DeleteLooks like a bunch of great books! I tried to make myself read ASOIAF slowly since it will be forever until he releases the final two books...but I ended up speeding through them. Now, I wait haha. Happy reading :)
ReplyDeleteI have been reading them slowly but I think after this one, I may have to speed it up a bit. :)
DeleteI love the Game of Thrones mini series, but could not get into the books myself. My hubby reads them, though, and he swears by them. Enjoy your loot!
