#FitReaders Weekly Check In (10)

I haven't done one of these in a long time but I am linking up with #FitReaders today.  It's hosted by the Geeky Blogger Book Blog and That's What I'm Talking About.

I've been working really hard to get back in the groove of doing serious exercise.  For most of the year, I have just exercised by walking; there's nothing wrong with that but my body needs more strenuous exercise in order to lose weight.  I also really need to build some muscle back up because my body just feels awful lately (I feel like an old lady!).  I started doing Couch 2 5K again; this is my third time doing it and I love how it helps my body get used to running again.  I just finished week 3 yesterday so I'm really excited about that.

For the past two weeks, I have exercised 5 days.  Three days a week I have been doing the C25K runs and then the other two days, I have been doing Jillian Michael's "Ripped in 30" DVD.  I really love that workout.  It's hard but it's so much better than the 30 Day Shred.  I am hoping that starting next week, I can move to working out six days a week.

This week I actually started doing some of my workouts in the morning.  For many many years (until I had my daughter), I would get up between 4:00 and 4:30 in the morning to workout because that worked best for me.  Since my daughter has had a lot of sleep issues, working out in the morning has been impossible.  She is sleeping better for now (knock on wood!) so I decided to try it out this week.  I did three of my workouts in the morning which made my evenings much less stressful.  I have to really start making myself go better earlier but I think I am going to try to do most of my workouts in the morning.  It's a great way to start the day!

I don't want to talk about my eating.  I am using My Fitness Pal again and did okay last week and pretty good this week.  The next few weeks will be tricky with Father's Day, my daughter's birthday and the 4th of July but I'm going to try do the best I can.

Anyway, that is all!  I'm terrible at keeping up with these posts but I'm hoping to do better over the next few months.

  1. Yea! Welcome back! Sounds like you know the drill and have a healthy outlook. One day at a time.

Right now, and for the past 2 years, my exercise is pretty much only walking. I'm okay with that b/c it's better than nothing. I know I need to add some strength training, and have it in my "long long term" goals. haha!

  2. Ah...another early bird!!! I, too, get up at 4:30 to exercise and last week when I wrote that in my post, every one that commented thought I was nuts ;) But, I love getting in my work out first thing in the morning, and I admit, I do go to bed rather early so for me, getting up at 4:30 isn't really a chore. And by early, I mean 9. I'm lucky that my gym opens at 4:30, so I can go right there if that's what I have planned for the day or if I'm just doing a workout video, I can get started right at home. I'm a walker and I do yoga - haven't been to classes in a while, just doing it at home for now - but I'm training for a big walk right now, so I've been alternating between walking at the gym on the treadmill and walking outside or at the mall if the weather's bad - I can only do so many miles on the treadmill before I want to pull my hair out and the mall by me is pretty big so I can get in a lot of miles and not get bored. But, I do hear you on needing something else besides just walking to keep in shape and lose the weight. That's why I do the yoga - and also because I am the worst at remembering to stretch!

Anyway, I hope you have a great week and that the mornings continue to be a good time for you to workout!

    1. When I had a gym membership, I used to be standing outside waiting for the doors to open at 4:30 am!!

I've found that the treadmill is much more tolerable if I read on my ereader. It's too hard to read a physical book but if I blow up the font a bit, I can get some good reading done on the treadmill. :)

Review: "Oleanna" by Julie K. Rose

Synopsis:  Set during the separation of Norway from Sweden in 1905, this richly detailed novel of love and loss was inspired by the life of the author's great-great-aunts. Oleanna and her sister Elisabeth are the last of their family working their farm deep in the western fjordland. A new century has begun, and the world outside is changing, but in the Sunnfjord their world is as small and secluded as the verdant banks of a high mountain lake. The arrival of Anders, a cotter living just across the farm's border, unsettles Oleanna 's peaceful but isolated existence. Sharing a common bond of loneliness and grief, Anders stirs within her the wildness and wanderlust she has worked so hard to tame. When she is confronted with another crippling loss, Oleanna must decide once and for all how to face her past, claim her future, and find her place in a wide new world. My Thoughts:   I was very surprised by what an absolutely beautiful story Oleanna is.  The ...

Review and Giveaway: "Distant Signs" by Anne Richter

Synopsis: Distant Signs is an intimate portrait of two families spanning three generations amidst turbulent political change, behind and beyond the Berlin Wall. In 1960s East Germany, Margret, a professor’s daughter from the city, meets and marries Hans, from a small village in Thuringia. The couple struggle to contend with their different backgrounds, and the emotional scars they bear from childhood in the aftermath of war. As East German history gradually unravels, with collision of the personal and political, their two families’ hidden truths are quietly revealed. An exquisitely written novel with strongly etched characters that stay with you long after the book is finished and an authentic portrayal of family life behind the iron curtain based on personal experience of the author who is East German and was 16 years old at the fall of the Berlin Wall. Why do families repeat destructive patterns of behaviour across generations? Should the personal take precedence over...

Mailbox Monday (49)

It's time for another Mailbox Monday post!  Once again I could not resist the cheap ebooks that Amazon and Barnes and Noble were promoting this week.  I really need to stop!  I already have more than I can read.  I also was able to spend a little time browsing at the library and I came home with a nice stack of books.  These days, I hardly ever get to spend time at the library by myself for more than a minute or two so it was wonderful to have time to just wander and see what I could find. Purchased (for kindle): The Color of Secrets by Lindsay Ashford The One I Was by Eliza Graham House of Bathory by Linda Lafferty   Purchased (for nook): One Night in Winter by Simon Sebag Montefiore  Becoming Queen Victoria by Kate Williams From the Library: The Messenger by Daniel Silva   The Ripper's Wife by Brandy Purdy Hotel Moscow by Talia Carner Brazen by Katherine Longshore What books did you get...
